Zygomatic Implants vs Traditional Dental Implants

Zygomatic Implants vs Traditional Dental Implants: Which is Right for You

In cases of full mouth rehabilitation, which means restoration of all the teeth in the mouth, there are 2 choices; zygomatic implants and traditional dental implants. The choice primarily depends on the biology of your remaining bone as well as the skill and recommendation of your oral surgeon. Let’s explore the characteristics and considerations for each type:

Traditional Dental Implants:

Traditional dental implants are the most used type of dental implant. They consist of two main components: a titanium implant fixture (that replicates the root of the tooth) that is surgically placed into the jawbone, and an abutment that connects the implant fixture to the prosthetic tooth or dental crown. Sufficient bone density and volume is required in the jaw to provide long term support and stability to the implants and associated crowns.

Advantages:

  • Proven long-term success.
  • Most common kind of implants practised.
  • Can replace single or multiple teeth (full arch rehabilitation).

Considerations:

  • Requires a minimum level of bone volume and density.
  • Patients with bone loss over the minimum levels may require additional procedures like bone grafting or sinus lift procedures for the upper jaw.

Zygomatic Implants:

When there is a lot of bone loss in the upper jaw, traditional implants can’t be placed successfully. Zygomatic implants are a viable alternative in such cases. The zygomatic bone or the cheekbone is where, the implants are anchored. By utilizing longer implants that extend into the zygomatic bone, these implants can bypass the need for additional procedures like bone grafting.

Advantages:

  • Can be used to rehabilitate patients with insufficient bone.
  • Eliminates the need for bone grafting.
  • Can provide immediate function, allowing for faster tooth replacement.

Considerations:

  • Complex procedure requiring a skilled and experienced surgeon.
  • Higher cost compared to traditional dental implants.

Be it Zygomatic implants or traditional implants, both are the best alternative to the replacement of natural teeth today. The selection of the specific kind of implant depends on the particular case. Consult with us to know what is best for you.
